Populations can be finite or infinite when we talk about statistics at any point, but it is determined by a specific number of what we want to measure. The population consisting of all the results that can be obtained by tossing a coin over and over again is infinite, although the results yield a 50 % probability. If the sample is representative of the population, the analysis of the sample allows valid conclusions to be drawn about the population. The part of statistics that deals with the conditions under which such inferences are valid is called inductive or inferential statistics. Since these inferences cannot be absolutely certain, the language of probability is used to present these conclusions (Murray and Stephens (2009) Estadística, México, MC Graw-Hill, p 3 and 4).
